Job summary

SC Works is seeking a Senior COBOL Developer to support a large-scale core business system. This 12-month contract offers a hybrid work schedule with onsite training in Blythewood, SC and potential for up to two remote days per week after training.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Visual/Micro Focus COBOL, strong Oracle SQL skills, and a proven track record of leading technical teams and delivering complex software solutions.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience with Visual and/or Micro Focus COBOL.
• 10+ years of experience coding and testing complex COBOL-based business systems.
• 5+ years of experience leading a technical software development team.
• 10+ years of experience in Oracle SQL in Windows client-server environments.
• 5+ years of experience providing Level 3 production support.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the core business system and assigned tickets for development/modification.
• Lead analysis and propose solutions for tickets/projects.
• Develop business specifications with business units and obtain sign-off.
• Code, test, promote, and coordinate with users to meet requirements.
• Provide production support for the core system.
• Deliver daily/weekly status updates to development manager and analysts.

We are seeking an experienced Senior COBOL Developer to join our team in support of a large-scale, mission-critical core business system. This is a 12-month contract opportunity with a hybrid work schedule. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Visual/Micro Focus COBOL, strong Oracle SQL skills, and a proven track record of leading technical teams and delivering complex software solutions.

Work Location & Schedule

• Hybrid position based in Blythewood, SC
• Strong preference for fully onsite presence during the training period
• After training, a schedule of up to two days remote per week may be discussed with the resource and hiring manager
• Candidate MUST be a CURRENT SC, NC, or GA resident. May relocate at candidate's discretion to meet the hybrid work schedule prior to the start date at their own expense.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze the core business system and assigned tickets for development and/or system modification
• Take the lead in analyzing and proposing solutions to assigned tickets and projects
• Partner with business units to develop business specifications, translate them into technical specifications, and obtain business sign-off
• Code, test, promote, and interact with impacted users to ensure solutions meet documented requirements
• Provide production support for the core system
• Deliver daily and weekly status updates to the development manager and business analysts

Required Skills & Experience

• 6+ years of experience with Visual and/or Micro Focus COBOL
• Working knowledge of Visual COBOL V9
• 10+ years of experience developing and maintaining complex, mission-critical applications in a Windows-based Client Server environment
• 5+ years of experience leading a technical software development team in planning and deployment of software systems
• 10+ years of experience coding and testing complex COBOL-based business systems in an Oracle SQL database and Windows-based client-server environment
• 5+ years of experience providing Level 3 (L3) production support
• 5+ years of experience functioning as the primary contact with business units to develop and review business and technical specifications and ensure delivery of specified functionality
• 10+ years of experience with computer system analysis, design coding, testing, debugging, and implementation techniques and practices for developing new systems or modifying existing systems

Preferred Skills

• Oracle 19+ SQL
• Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET / C# development environment
• Experience working in a governmental environment
• Visual COBOL technical certifications

Additional Skills

• Experience mentoring and guiding less experienced technical colleagues
• Proven proficiency communicating effectively with users, vendors, staff members, and management both orally and in writing
• Ability to plan, define, lead, direct, instruct, and review project work and personnel
