Job summary

AbbVie invites applications for a Principal Data Architect to shape a cloud-native data foundation enabling AI/ML in discovery science. You will own architecture, adoption, and ongoing improvements of a scalable data platform linking laboratory data with ML workflows.

The role reports to the Head of AI/ML in BGM and collaborates with wet lab scientists, ML engineers, software data engineers, and governance teams; potential to expand into leadership in the future.

Qualifications

• MS with 14+ years or PhD with 8+ years in machine learning, CS, data science or related field.
• 6+ years of experience in data architecture with enterprise data platforms.
• Graduate degree in computer science, data science, computational biology, or related field.
• Experience designing enterprise data platforms.
• Strong technical skills in data modeling, integration, storage, pipelines, and AI/ML integration.
• Production programming in SQL, Python, or Java.
• Experience building cloud data infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Ability to work across wet lab and dry lab scientific workflows.
• Experience collaborating across functions and stakeholder alignment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience applying data governance in day-to-day decisions.
• Experience in pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

Responsibilities

• Define architecture for a scalable, cloud-native data platform.
• Design data models and integration patterns connecting datasets across lab groups.
• Partner with wet lab scientists and automation engineers to maximize data value.
• Work with data scientists and deployment engineers to support model development and production.
• Advance FAIR data practices and data stewardship.
• Champion connected data, data-as-a-product, and cloud-first principles.
• Collaborate with governance experts to implement data policies.
• Align data infrastructure initiatives with broader AbbVie efforts.
• Communicate platform impact through stories, metrics, and KPIs.
