Job summary

Merchants Insurance Group, a leading P&C insurer, seeks a Claims Coverage Counsel/Administrator for its Melville, NY team. The role focuses on complex coverage analysis, opinions, and dispute resolution, partnering with claims, underwriting, and regulators.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in coverage analysis or as an attorney, with JD preferred and strong writing abilities. Hybrid work with two office days per week.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree preferred with license in good standing.
• Minimum 5 years of insurance coverage experience or attorney experience.
• Proficiency with Westlaw or other legal research applications; CPCU desirable.
• Minimum 10 years of technical experience in complex coverage analysis.
• Leadership experience is highly desired.
• Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepares coverage communications per internal standards and state regulations.
• Collaborates with claims professionals to prepare/review coverage letters for complex issues.
• Provides legal or coverage guidance for declaratory judgments where Merchants is named party.
• Directs outside counsel on litigation strategy.
• Leads training for claims staff on policy interpretation and regulatory compliance.
• Supports underwriting and product development with regulatory insights.
