Job summary

Merchants Insurance Group in Melville, NY is seeking an experienced Claims Coverage Counsel or Claims Coverage Administrator for our Claim Legal Team. The role focuses on coverage analysis, dispute resolution, and risk assessment for first- and third-party claims, including complex coverage scenarios and regulatory considerations.

Ideal candidates will have a JD (preferred) or equivalent experience, 5+ years in insurance coverage or as an attorney, strong legal writing and research skills, and

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree preferred with license in good standing.
• Minimum 5 years of insurance coverage experience and/or practicing attorney experience.
• Proficiency with Westlaw or other legal research applications; CPCU desirable.
• Minimum 10 years of technical experience in complex coverage analysis.
• Prior leadership experience is highly desirable.
• Strong written and oral communication with cross-department collaboration.
• Experience with construction and labor law coverage issues related to risk transfer.

Responsibilities

• Prepares coverage communication consistent with internal standards and regulations.
• Works with frontline claims for coverage analysis and letters for complex disputes.
• Provides legal or coverage guidance on declaratory judgments in which Merchants is a party.
• Directs outside counsel on litigation strategy.
• Leads claim staff training on legal or coverage matters.
• Assists underwriting, product development, and regulatory compliance programs.
