Job summary

Pierce County in Washington is seeking a seasoned Civil Engineer to lead a multidisciplinary transportation team. You will supervise planners, engineers, and GIS specialists, directing modeling, data analysis, and growth projections for major capital projects and long-range planning.

You will standardize design guidance, performance metrics, and project delivery processes to ensure consistent, high-quality outcomes across the organization.

Qualifications

• Licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
• Nine years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in civil engineering, may be substituted for experience up to four years.
• Professional Engineers licensed in another state must obtain licensure in Washington within six months.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Manages assigned resources to complete work and secure approval of major engineering programs using planning and management methods.
• Provides leadership to professional and technical staff responsible for implementing major engineering programs; delegates authority appropriately.
• Trains staff on criteria and standards; offers engineering guidance to staff and county officials.
• Develops recruitment and selection processes; conducts final interviews and hires recommendations.
• Reviews subordinate employee performance; initiates disciplinary actions when necessary; responds to grievances.
• Develops and monitors budgets; establishes financial management policies.
• Ensures compliance with regulations and engineering standards across projects.
• Coordinates activities with other sections, departments, and jurisdictions.
• Sets team goals and contributes to division-wide objectives.
• Prepares engineering reports for state, federal, and local authorities; presents findings.
