Qualifications

SUMMARY

The Senior Civil Engineer is well versed in land development, can manage projects with minimal oversight, delegate work to staff, and mentor junior engineers in their professional development. The senior engineer will be primarily responsible for overseeing and managing the production of design from initial concepts to final permitted drawings on multiple projects. They must have the professional knowledge and skill to research, analyze, plan, and implement effective engineering designs, and frequently use independent judgment. They will represent Kier & Wright in all communications with clients, developers, design teams, and public agencies throughout the course of the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Proposals

  • Assist with the preparation of proposals, including write-ups on project-specific approaches.
  • Prepare scope, select staff, and develop resource-loaded schedules.
  • Provide prior project experience of subconsultants.
  • Provide breakdown and valuation.

Project Management

  • Participate in contract negotiations, approve client billing, and secure contract amendments for scope and fee changes.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and control project team activities with minimal input from the team lead.
  • Maintain project schedules, budgets, and track project risks.
  • Develop working relationships with clients, contractors, stakeholders, and relevant agencies.

Staff Management

  • May perform or be consulted for input on annual employee evaluations, in addition to ongoing mentoring, goal setting, and skill development.

Technical

  • Independently provide accurate designs of on-site and off-site improvements for planning and construction of commercial, industrial, and high-density residential projects.
  • Assist in QAQC review of project plan sets.
  • Design grading, drainage, utilities, and stormwater treatment independently.
  • Prepare civil engineering calculations and reports.
  • Estimate construction costs.
  • Coordinate with municipalities, architects, subconsultants, and clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION + EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience and PE license in CA, or 20+ years of experience without license.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., QSP/QSD, PMP) are a plus.
  • Project management and employee management experience.
  • Proficiency in computers, Microsoft Office, Adobe, Internet, etc.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bluebeam is required.
