Job summary

University of North Carolina Charlotte seeks a Chiller Technician to maintain and optimize central cooling plants and complex chiller systems across campus. You will provide senior technical leadership, diagnose issues, and ensure EPA 608 refrigerant and OSHA safety compliance while minimizing downtime and supporting climate-sensitive research environments.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with 2 years related experience.
Experience troubleshooting hydronic cooling systems.
EPA 608 certification required.
Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, overhauls, and repairs on complex commercial centrifugal, screw, scroll, magnetic-bearing, and absorption chiller systems.
Troubleshoot central cooling plant operations and optimize efficiency (kW/ton).
Lead technicians and mentor shop personnel through complex repairs and emergency workflows.
Implement predictive maintenance techniques (vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil sampling).
Ensure EPA 608 refrigerant management and OSHA safety compliance (LOTO, arc flash).
Develop and implement emergency contingency plans for outages, including temporary mobile skids.
Inspect, verify, and commission work by contractors to ASHRAE standards and codes.
