Job summary

SmithGroup's Los Angeles office seeks a Senior Campus Planner to lead our Campus Planning Studio, guiding teams and strategy for growth. You will oversee interdisciplinary planning, manage client relationships and participate in marketing and presentations to achieve cohesive, high-quality outcomes.

The ideal candidate brings 15+ years in AE campus planning, a professional degree, licensure, and a track record with higher education clients.

Qualifications

  • Professional degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning or equivalent.
  • 15+ years related AE industry experience preferred.
  • Registration or licensure in relevant field.
  • Proven track record of winning campus planning work with higher education clients.
  • Experience with higher education clients through all phases of campus planning projects.
  • Sustainability credentials and/or commitment to certification within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrated leadership, client satisfaction and technical competence.
  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to manage budgets, timelines and client relationships.
  • Proficiency in 2D programs (AutoCAD) and 3D programs (SketchUp); MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Provide team leadership, management and strategy for growth of the Campus Planning Studio.
  • Lead interdisciplinary campus planning teams as Team Lead, Lead Campus Planner or Project Manager.
  • Participate in and often lead meetings with internal teams, consultants and clients.
  • Communicate planning issues and recommendations to campus and community stakeholders in public meetings.
  • Lead production of project presentations, plan reports and deliverables for cohesive outcomes.
  • Identify target clients and support business development with studio leaders and directors.
  • Maintain relationships with past clients and develop relationships with current/new clients.
  • Provide marketing leadership through all project phases, from initial contacts to negotiations.
  • Represent SmithGroup's campus planning expertise at conferences and events.
  • Collaborate with design leadership to advance design quality and outcomes.
  • Participate in recruiting, coaching and staff development.
  • Meet technical and administrative targets with the Campus Planning Studio Leader.
  • Travel regionally and/or nationally up to 25-30%.

The Los Angeles office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Campus Plannerto join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Provide team leadership, management, and strategy necessary for the continued growth of our Campus Planning Studio consistent with SmithGroup's strategic themes of growing the firm, building expertise, and thinking holistically.
  • Lead interdisciplinary campus planning teams by serving in Team Lead, Lead Campus Planner, and/or Project Manager roles.
  • Participate in, and often lead, team meetings involving internal colleagues, consultants, and/or clients to share findings and recommendations with meeting participants.
  • Communicate planning issues, opportunities, and recommendations to a wide variety of campus and community stakeholders as part of public meetings.
  • Lead efforts around production of project presentations, plan reports and all project deliverables to ensure an integrated and cohesive outcome.
  • Identify target clients and support business development plans with the Campus Planning Studio Leader, Market Leader, Regional Higher Education Leaders and Business Development Director(s).
  • Maintain relationships with past clients and proactively develop relationships with current/new clients.
  • Provide marketing leadership via active participation in projects through all phases, from initial client contacts through marketing pursuits, sales efforts, and contract negotiations.
  • Represent SmithGroup's higher education and campus planning expertise through attendance and/or presentations at local, regional, and national conferences.
  • Work with the Campus Planning Studio Leader to meet technical and administrative targets.
  • Participate in recruiting, coaching, and career development of staff.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A professional degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning or equivalent combination of related experience and/or training.
  • 15+ years related experience preferred and/or training (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in the AE Industry.
  • Registration or licensure in relevant field.
  • Successful track record of winning campus planning work with higher education clients.
  • Experience with higher education clients through all phases of campus planning projects.
  • Sustainability credentials and/or commitment to achieve certification within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and a strong commitment to working in a team-based setting, delivering high client satisfaction and technical competence.
  • Strong leadership skills in the areas of business development; professional and civic involvement.
  • Strong business acumen and critical thinking skills in the pursuit of the work.
  • The ability to take responsibility and ownership to meet standards, budgets, and deadlines.
  • The ability to manage clients, project teams and project processes with ease.
  • High-level understanding of 2D programs including AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS; and 3D programs including Sketchup, along with Microsoft Office suite.
  • A high degree of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel regionally and/or nationally 25-30%.
