Job summary

UCLA is seeking a seasoned labor and employment attorney to serve as Principal Campus Counsel. The role provides strategic legal guidance on complex workplace matters and supports UCLA’s clinical enterprise across Southern California.

The Principal Campus Counsel will collaborate with senior leaders, HR, faculty, physicians and management, balancing legal risk with operational needs and ethics. A JD from an ABA-accredited school and CA bar admission are required.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree from ABA-accredited school and active CA Bar membership or eligible for immediate admission.
• Minimum 8 years of employment and/or labor law experience with knowledge of federal and CA laws.
• Experience in an academic setting is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of federal and CA labor and employment laws (e.g., FLSA, FEHA, FMLA/CFRA, ADA, ADEA).
• Experience applying employment law in complex institutional environments including health/academic contexts.
• Proven conflict resolution and mediation abilities.

Responsibilities

• Advise senior UCLA leadership on employment practices, organizational decisions, and regulatory changes.
• Represent the University in administrative proceedings or litigation as needed and coordinate with outside counsel.
• Collaborate with UCLA units and UC Health on matters with institutional impact.
• Provide training and guidance to leaders to balance legal, operational, and organizational considerations.
