Job summary

The City of Davenport, IA is seeking a skilled transit vehicle mechanic lead to diagnose and repair diesel bus systems, supervise a team, and perform complex maintenance tasks. You will work Monday–Friday, 2 PM–10 PM, with CDL training provided on hire.

Starting pay is $29.77 per hour with progression to $30.21 per hour after 6 months, plus shift differential. Comprehensive benefits include health, retirement, and tuition reimbursement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3–5 years of skilled full-performance mechanic work with heavy-duty diesel.
  • ASE Master Technician certification within first year is required/desired and tools for Master Technician must be owned.
  • CDL permit within 30 days and Class B CDL with endorsements within 60 days; CDL training provided by City.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical defects in transit vehicles and lead a repair team.
  • Perform major/minor repairs on buses and diesel equipment; adjust brakes, transmissions, and other systems.
  • Maintain parts records, time spent, and repairs; conduct road calls and on-the-road repairs.
  • Inspect, test and diagnose malfunctions using test instruments; ensure safety compliance.

Under direction performs work of moderate difficulty as a skilled mechanic in the modification, maintenance and repair of all transit vehicles and act as a lead worker in an automotive truck repair shop; and performs related work as required.

Starting Pay | $29.77* per hour 6 Months | $30.21* per hour

*Plus shift differential

The hours for this position are Monday - Friday 2PM - 10PM.

The City will provide and pay for CDL training upon hire.

Diagnoses mechanical defects in all transit vehicles.

Diagnostic, electrical and AC skills.

Makes major and minor mechanical repairs: adjusts brakes and clutches on buses; overhauls controls, cylinders and transmissions; disassembles, repairs, grinds or replaces worn parts.

Fits new parts and adjusts oil, water and fuel pumps, governors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering gear; checks and replaces rollers, pins and bushings; times and adjusts motors; replaces electrical wiring; overhauls hydraulic lifts and steering assemblies.

Uses welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen various parts and pieces of equipment; performs body repair work.

Lays out and fabricates units and parts for the alteration or rebuilding of major parts of old equipment; acts as lead worker, recommends repairs and methods, instructs mechanics, assigns work to assistants.

Maintains records of parts used, equipment worked on, repairs made and time spent on jobs.

Maintains safe, clean, productive and efficient work area including ensuring work area is in compliance with all Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements.

Performs road calls and on-the-road repairs as assigned.

Records time spent, parts used and repairs and/or maintenance conducted on appropriate forms.

Road test vehicles when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.

Perform duties with little or no supervision within a timely and efficient manner.

Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.

Adjust and replace brake, tighten bolts and screws and reassemble equipment.

Raise buses, truck and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.

Inspect, test and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts and pressure gauges.

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

One year of technical knowledge of major vehicle systems and diesel equipment is required.

Three to five years experience as a skilled full performance mechanic including one year in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty diesel required. Transit vehicle certification preferred or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the required work in this position.

Must obtain ASE Master Truck Technician (T Series) certification or ASE Master Transit Bus (H Series) certification within the first year of hire date and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess the recommended minimum hand tools for a Master Technician within the first year of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.

Must possess a valid driver’s license upon application, obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Permit (CDLP) with air brake and passenger endorsements within 30 days of hire and obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsements within 60 days of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. The City will provide and pay for CDL training upon hire.

Must pass a background check and DOT physical examination as prescribed by the city and carry the DOT Medical Card at all times. All CDL personnel are subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Random Drug & Alcohol Program.

Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment.

Considerable Knowledge of:

Major vehicle systems and diesel equipment.

Construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of gasoline and diesel equipment.

Methods and techniques used in the diagnosis, timing and adjustment of internal combustion engines.

Routine inspection procedures used to evaluate operating conditions and functioning of safety devices.

Work hazards and safety precautions.

Considerable Skill in:

Systematically organizing the steps in completing a repair job.

Using shop tools and testing equipment, such as: drills, grinders, micrometers, boring bars, reamers and welding equipment.

Interpreting detailed service manuals and diagrams.

Assigning, monitoring and inspecting the work of subordinates.

Instructing subordinates in repair techniques.

Good judgment and decision making.

Working Skill in:

Performing audio and visual inspection of equipment to identify problems.

Describing and recording parts.

The layout and fabrication of parts.
