Job summary

Rockingham County is seeking a licensed building professional to enforce the Virginia State Building Code and related regulations across multiple locations. The role oversees inspections, plan reviews, and enforcement activities to ensure safe, compliant construction practices.

The ideal candidate will apply sound judgment, communicate complex code requirements clearly, and lead a small team in a dynamic, service-focused environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of building experience with licensure or equivalent; at least three years in responsible charge of work.
• ICC Certified Building Official certification within one year of appointment as acting or permanent Building Official.
• License as professional engineer or architect, building, fire, or trade inspector, contractor, housing inspector, or superintendent.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee Building Inspections operations, including supervision, training, and performance management of staff.
• Conduct and/or review inspections of residential and commercial construction for code compliance.
• Perform plan review for residential and commercial projects to verify code compliance and support permitting.
• Provide clear code interpretations and technical guidance to contractors and design professionals.
• Direct and support code enforcement activities to ensure compliance with building regulations.
• Coordinate with the Fire Marshal's Office and other agencies on inspections and life safety matters.
