Job summary

City of Santa Monica seeks a Senior Building Inspector to perform advanced inspections across residential, commercial, industrial and mixed-use projects, providing expert interpretation and guidance on building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and accessibility codes.

Incumbents mentor and coach inspectors, coordinate complex inspection activities, review plans and reports, and support training efforts. The role emphasizes technical leadership without formal supervisory authority.

Qualifications

• Two years of work experience as Building Inspector II or six years of related inspection work.
• Experience with complex commercial, industrial, or mixed-use projects is highly desirable.
• Experience mentoring inspectors and providing technical guidance is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced combination inspections across complex projects, including structural, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Provide technical leadership on difficult inspection issues and code interpretations.
• Review plans, specifications, and reports to verify code compliance.
• Coordinate inspection activities and participate in preconstruction meetings.
