Job summary

Dewberry is seeking a Lead Building Construction Inspector to oversee inspection activities in the Hampton Roads, VA area. The candidate will monitor contractor work for contract compliance on commercial/industrial projects of moderate to high complexity and manage inspection staff as the owner’s representative.

The role requires extensive field experience in building construction, knowledge of codes, and strong communication skills; certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in building construction inspection or related field.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering preferred but not required or 5+ years relative experience.
• ICC and building inspector certifications preferred (C5, B2, E2, M2, P2).
• Strong knowledge of building codes and inspection techniques.

Responsibilities

• Proactively identify field issues and develop solutions to keep work moving.
• Monitor operations to ensure contractor compliance with plans, contract terms and specifications.
• Coordinate and schedule construction inspection phases with contractor, DGS representatives, and other agencies.
• Review construction plans and inspect commercial/industrial buildings for code compliance.
• Be familiar with structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety components.
• Document all field activities; work collaboratively with owner and contractor; represent Dewberry.
• Identify changes to construction plans to meet field conditions.
• Take field measurements of pay items.
• Observe and monitor contractor’s construction equipment.
• Proficient with MS Word and Excel for daily diaries and calculations.
