Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks a Senior Bridge Standards Engineer (Civil Engineer IV) to lead structural analysis and design of bridge standards projects, including the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, and related memoranda.

This union position requires an Illinois Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer license, four years in civil/structural/bridge engineering, and strong communication skills. Hybrid work arrangement and a salary range of $6,281–$9,792 per month.

Qualifications

  • Reviews and recommends approval/disapproval of proprietary products for qualified product lists in Illinois.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and fosters fair treatment of employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for the structural analysis and design of routine to extremely complex bridgestandards projects, including projects related to the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, All Bridge DesignMemoranda, and associated details and base sheets. This position is also responsible for conducting specialinvestigations concerning design specifications, design concepts, and construction procedures for thedepartment.

Essential Functions
  • Develops routine to extremely complex structural standards which incorporate current methods andtechnology.
  • Produces design computations utilized in the preparation of structural plans.
  • Aids in the updating of design policy documents including the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, Design Guides, and All Bridge Design Memoranda.
  • Reviews and recommends approval/disapproval of proprietary products for qualified product lists in Illinois.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registrationas a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil, structural, or bridge engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of civil engineering with an emphasis on bridge design and construction.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires a valid drivers license.
  • Requires occasional statewide and out-of-state travel with overnight stays.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
