Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Contracts Engineer to direct and coordinate design, plan preparation, and construction supervision of maintenance and repair projects in District 1 Region 1. You will oversee bridge repairs, bituminous resurfacing, and roadside development, ensuring timely lettings, quality workmanship, and compliance with contract values.

A valid IL PE or Structural PE license with six years of experience is required.

Position Overview

This position is accountable for directing and coordinating the design, plan preparation, and construction supervision of formal maintenance and other repair projects, which include bridge deficiency repairs, bituminous resurfacing, and roadside development projects to ensure quality and timely lettings, engineering efficiency, and satisfactory construction.

Essential Functions

• Ensures the timely preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates of cost for formal repair contracts and Day Labor Projects.
• Administers district-wide formal maintenance contracts and ensures contractor compliance with the plans and specifications to obtain quality workmanship to the limits of the contract value.
• Supervises the preparation of landscaping plans and specifications for all applicable district improvements, supervises construction of landscaping items and inspections of plant and other materials involved, prepares input to other Bureaus regarding erosion control, rest areas, seeding, tree preservation, landscape planting, and aesthetics.
• Provides input, reviews, and follow-up of contract plans prepared by other agencies or bureaus.
  Provides counseling and training to improve the performance of subordinate technical staff.
• Maintains liaison with other bureaus and governmental agencies in maintenance and roadside development matters.
• Devises appropriate solutions to maintenance problems in the absence of specific guidelines and with consideration to resource constraints.
• Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
• Six years of experience in civil engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five years of supervising staff and managing engineering functions.
• Extensive experience accurately preparing contract plans, specifications, and estimates for highway projects.
• Great organization, leadership and self-motivational skills.
• Ability to operate efficiently under pressure to meet time constraints and deadlines.
• Ability to display technical ingenuity and apply innovative concepts to responsibilities.
• Working knowledge of SWPPPs & 404 Permits.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
