Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks a Maintenance Support Engineer. This Civil Engineer VI will develop policies for operations roadsides, maintain 46,359 lane miles, and lead maintenance and training programs across districts.

The role requires IL licensure as a PE or structural engineer, six years in civil engineering, and three years in supervision. A hybrid in-office schedule is available at our Sangamon County locations with extensive benefits.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures for operations roadsidemaintenance and training. The incumbent is responsible for the development and successful implementation ofthe annual program to maintain and preserve 46,359 lane miles of pavement, maintain facilities at 53 rest areas,as well as various roadside maintenance activities.

Essential Functions

• Develops policies and procedures for maintenance field operations to achieve most efficient maintenanceoperations, improve services, and make the best use of available resources.
• Develops policies and procedures required to guide the winter snow and ice removal operations activities for the state highway system.
• Develops policies and procedures for vegetation management (both turf and plant related activities) on highway rights-of-way on a statewide basis and oversees policies and capital projects for rest areas.
• Develops policies and procedures governing pavement maintenance and preservation and serves on the Pavement Preservation Committee.
• Makes recommendations on annual program priorities and annual budgets applicable to maintenance operations.
• Oversees training programs in the Bureau of Operations and ensures that suitable training is developed and implemented for central office and district personnel.
• Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
• Six years of experience in civil engineering.
• Three years supervising staff and managing engineering functions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering with specializedknowledge of transportation engineering.
• Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to interpret, develop, and implement policies and procedures.
• Experience with budgeting for construction and maintenance of highways.
