Job summary

Johnson & Johnson’s Orthopaedics team is recruiting a Senior Scientist, Biomaterials R&D, to advance new biomaterials technologies and support in-market products through the lifecycle. Location can be Warsaw, IN or West Chester, PA.

The role requires leading experimental work, developing test methods, and collaborating across functions to drive design verification and regulatory submissions. Strong background in chemistry and materials science is essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum of six years in development or testing of biomaterials-based medical devices or combination products.
• MS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent; PhD preferred.
• Experience with GMP, QSR, and ISO quality requirements is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of biomaterial technologies and chemical test methods required.
• Excellent communication skills for upper management and cross‑functional teams.
• Ability to lead as a technical and project leader and manage priorities.

Responsibilities

• Act as SME in biomaterials science and chemical test methods.
• Be a technical member of a cross‑functional project core team.
• Coordinate with design, marketing, quality, supply chain, and regulatory to test new technologies.
• Develop testing protocols using laboratory instruments and standard or custom methods.
• Perform laboratory tasks safely in analytical, chemical, or biological labs.
• Develop and execute design verification/validation plans for regulatory strategy.
• Contribute to IP development for new designs or technologies.
• Collaborate with suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and prototypes.
• Design and execute experiments, present data with analysis, and write reports.
• Apply statistical methods for test method development and verification/validation.
• Follow New Product Development process and ensure high-quality design verifications.
• Potential budget responsibility and input on allocation/prioritization.
• Support audits, remediation projects, and regulatory compliance activities.
• Participate in the company's compliance program as required.
