The role involves evaluating high-consequence cases, distinguishing legitimate research from risks, mentoring junior staff, and producing high-fidelity labels for safety classifiers at scale.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in microbiology, virology, or related field.
• 5+ years in biodefense, biosecurity policy, biosafety oversight, or BSL-3 labs.
• Ability to distinguish benign scholarly work from illicit protocols.
• Peer-review, mentorship, and quality standards in scientific analysis.
• Strong technical writing to produce risk memos for leadership.

Responsibilities

• Review and adjudicate high-severity escalations from detection queues.
• Apply dual-use reasoning to separate benign research from risks.
• Provide QA and mentorship to junior specialists and calibrations.
• Evaluate appeals; document evidence-based enforcement actions.
• Generate precise annotations to train safety classifiers.
• Summarize findings for senior leaders and client safety leads.
