Job summary

Abbott, a global healthcare leader, seeks a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in La Jolla, CA. You will lead and mentor teams on complex R&D projects in Cancer Diagnostics, focusing on germline variant calling and NG sequencing pipelines for diagnostic development.

You’ll collaborate across disciplines, develop machine learning models, and guide junior scientists while advancing innovative diagnostic technologies.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics, or related field (or Master’s + required experience).
• 5+ years of bioinformatics experience.
• 3+ years in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science or pharmaceutical industry.
• Proficient in Linux HPC or cloud environments.
• Ability to write code in at least three programming or scripting languages.
• Knowledge of NGS, genomics, and statistics (R/JMP).

Responsibilities

• Algorithm development to improve germline variant calling.
• Build bioinformatics pipeline prototypes for germline sequencing.
• Develop ML models to support variant classification and clinical significance predictions.
