Job summary

Illumina in the United Kingdom is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist/Engineer for the DRAGEN Array team to drive algorithm development, statistical modelling, and scalable software for genotyping and NGS analyses.

You'll collaborate with wet-lab scientists, product teams, and engineers to translate biology into validated computational solutions, with a focus on production-grade software, CI/CD, testing automation, and robust observability.

Qualifications

• PhD in relevant field is required or closely aligned.
• Strong algorithm development and statistical modelling expertise.
• Experience with genomic data analysis at scale.
• Programming in Python and/or R.
• Experience with production software development practices (CI/CD, testing automation).
• Knowledge of testing automation, CI/CD and software lifecycle processes.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of algorithms and probabilistic models for array and NGS data.
• Apply statistical, computational, and machine-learning methods to large-scale genetic data.
• Design and develop production-grade software that automates analytical workflows.
• Contribute to software testing automation (unit/integration/regression).
• Define and maintain CI/CD workflows for DRAGEN Array software.
• Implement telemetry, logging, and monitoring to improve observability.
• Ensure software lifecycle practices including requirements traceability and validation.
• Collaborate with wet-lab scientists, product management, and engineering teams.
• Mentor staff-level colleagues and contribute to best practices in algorithm design and software engineering.
