Our client, a fast-growing renewable energy developer and owner-operator, is seeking a Senior BESS Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of utility-scale and distributed battery energy storage projects.
This position will play a key role throughout the entire project lifecycle, from early-stage concept development and detailed engineering through construction, commissioning, and project closeout. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical engineering expertise with experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing technical deliverables, and supporting large-scale energy infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of conceptual and detailed electrical designs for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Prepare and review single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and complete Issued for Construction (IFC) drawing packages.
- Equipment arrangements
- Conduit and cable routing designs
- Grounding systems
- Electrical equipment layouts
- Prepare technical specifications, equipment data sheets, engineering calculations, cost estimates, bid packages, and procurement documentation.
- Review engineering deliverables throughout design milestones to ensure quality and technical accuracy.
- Review and interpret electrical studies, including:
- Short circuit analysis
- Load flow studies
- Arc flash evaluations
- Protection and relay coordination studies
- Utilize industry-standard software such as ETAP, SKM, or comparable platforms.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations, including:
- NEC
- NESC
- IEEE
- NFPA
- FERC
- NERC
- IEEE 1547
- UL 9540
- Evaluate and validate vendor submittals, equipment selections, and multidisciplinary engineering designs for quality and compliance.
Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Collaborate with civil, structural, geotechnical, fire protection, telecommunications, SCADA, and high-voltage engineering teams.
- Participate in design reviews, technical workshops, and value-engineering initiatives.
- Serve as a technical resource during meetings with contractors, suppliers, consultants, utilities, and regulatory agencies.
- Support permitting and interconnection activities by providing technical expertise and documentation.
- Provide engineering support during construction through:
- RFI responses
- Change order evaluations
- Construction progress reviews
- Conduct field visits and site inspections during installation and commissioning activities.
- Identify project risks, recommend mitigation strategies, and support project execution planning.
- Assist with commissioning activities and validation of system performance.
Leadership & Project Execution
- Manage engineering schedules, deliverables, and design milestones across multiple projects.
- Help develop and improve internal engineering standards, templates, and design practices.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and professional development support.
- Support business development efforts through technical reviews, project planning, and proposal development.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience supporting battery energy storage, renewable energy, electrical distribution, power generation, or power systems engineering projects.
- Strong knowledge of BESS technologies and grid integration principles.
- Experience developing electrical designs, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and equipment layouts.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience using power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and industry best practices.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
- Ability to travel periodically to project sites and industry events.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT/PE-track status.
- Experience working on EPC, design-build, or utility-scale infrastructure projects.
- Direct experience supporting battery energy storage system projects from development through commissioning.
- Familiarity working with EPC contractors, OEMs, utilities, and third-party engineering consultants.
- Experience with commissioning protocols, testing procedures, and project closeout activities.
- Knowledge of communications networks, SCADA systems, and fire protection requirements for energy storage facilities.
