Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
b19 is partnering with an established renewable energy company to find an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role is focused on the detailed engineering and design of AC collector systems, medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, and associated balance-of-plant (BOP) systems from concept through construction.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in electrical utility design, including collector systems, conductor sizing, equipment selection, and California GO95 requirements. Experience designing utility-scale battery storage facilities is essential.
Responsibilities
Electrical Design
- Lead the electrical design of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) collector systems.
- Develop engineering packages from conceptual design through Issued for Construction (IFC).
- Design medium-voltage AC collector systems, including overhead and underground distribution.
- Produce and review:
- Electrical site plans
- Conduit and cable routing drawings
- Bill of Materials (BOMs)
- Size medium-voltage and low-voltage conductors, cables, conduit systems, and raceways.
- Perform voltage drop, ampacity, fault current, and equipment loading calculations.
- Develop grounding and bonding designs for BESS facilities.
- Select and specify electrical equipment including:
- Pad-mounted transformers
- Medium-voltage switchgear
- Reclosers
- Sectionalizing switches
- Metering equipment
- Underground structures and duct banks
Utility & Collector System Design
- Design overhead collector systems in accordance with GO95 requirements and applicable utility standards.
- Develop pole loading calculations and construction packages where applicable.
- Coordinate utility interconnection requirements for collector system interfaces.
- Prepare construction drawings for overhead and underground distribution systems.
- Ensure compliance with utility engineering standards and applicable electrical codes.
Project Delivery
- Support projects from early development through detailed engineering and construction.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and mechanical disciplines to integrate electrical designs.
- Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals for compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare technical specifications and support procurement activities.
- Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and provide engineering support during construction.
- Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site inspections, and commissioning activities as required.
- Serve as a technical lead during client meetings and design reviews.
- Develop engineering scopes, schedules, and cost estimates.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers.
- Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates, and design procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- 7+ years of electrical design experience in utility, renewable energy, or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of California GO95 standards.
- Experience sizing conductors, cables, conduit, raceways, and electrical equipment.
- Experience preparing construction drawing packages using AutoCAD.
- Working knowledge of:
- NEC
- NESC
- GO95
- IEEE standards
- Utility engineering standards
- Strong understanding of electrical balance-of-plant (eBOP) design.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- Experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) or renewable energy projects.
- Experience designing collector systems for solar or battery storage facilities.
- Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and construction practices.
- Experience using ETAP, EasyPower, CYMCAP, or similar engineering software.
- Knowledge of grounding design, cable ampacity studies, and equipment specification development.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
