Job summary

Acre is seeking an experienced electrical engineer to provide technical leadership for utility-scale battery energy storage projects across development, procurement, delivery and operations. You will evaluate BESS sizing, performance, degradation, and integration with EMS, SCADA, and safety systems to maximize long-term value.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Energy, or related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience on utility-scale BESS projects across design, procurement, construction, commissioning, or operations.
  • Strong knowledge of BESS architecture including battery systems, BMS, PCS, EMS, plant controls, SCADA, thermal management, and safety systems.
  • Ability to evaluate BESS sizing, usable energy, efficiency, degradation, augmentation, operating limits, and end-of-life performance.
  • Experience developing or reviewing BESS technical specs, performance models, equipment designs, testing requirements, warranties, and performance guarantees.
  • Experience supporting BESS supplier or integrator selection, procurement, EPC evaluations, contract negotiations, and multidisciplinary design reviews.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 855, UL 9540/9540A, and relevant electrical and fire codes.
  • Strong technical and commercial judgment with ability to manage consultants, suppliers, and cross-functional stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for utility-scale battery energy storage projects across development, procurement, delivery, and operations.
  • Support technology selection, system architecture reviews, and equipment evaluation to optimize performance and long-term value.
  • Lead technical due diligence including assessment of design approaches, performance assumptions, operations requirements, and risks.
  • Review and evaluate engineering deliverables, technical specs, equipment proposals, performance models, and project documentation.
  • Support sizing, operational performance, energy capacity, efficiency, degradation, augmentation strategies, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to align engineering with commercial, procurement, construction, and operations.
  • Support equipment procurement processes, technical bid evaluations, vendor selection, and contract reviews.
  • Identify and communicate technical, commercial, and operational risks impacting project execution or long-term performance.
  • Review project compliance with applicable standards and project-specific performance objectives.
  • Support testing, commissioning, performance validation, and project handover activities.
  • Manage external consultants and advisors; contribute to continuous improvements of processes, standards, and best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance to stakeholders to support investment, acquisitions, and project development decisions.

This role is perfect for you if you have:
  • Experience with both standalone BESS and co-located renewable energy projects.
  • Experience working for a developer, owner/operator, utility, EPC contractor, engineering consultancy, systems integrator, or equipment manufacturer.
  • Experience evaluating battery performance, degradation, augmentation strategies, advanced inverter technologies, or grid integration considerations.
  • Experience supporting project testing, commissioning, operational performance reviews, warranty management, or technical issue resolution.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, financing diligence, insurer reviews, or investment evaluations.
  • Familiarity with electrical analysis, modeling, and data analytics tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, PSSE, PowerFactory, Python, MATLAB, or SQL.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including direct experience with utility-scale BESS projects across design, procurement, construction, commissioning, or operations.
  • Strong knowledge of BESS architecture and integration, including battery systems, BMS, PCS, medium-voltage equipment, EMS, plant controls, SCADA, thermal management, and safety systems.
  • Ability to evaluate BESS sizing, usable energy, efficiency, auxiliary consumption, availability, degradation, augmentation, operating limitations, and end-of-life performance.
  • Experience developing or reviewing BESS technical specifications, performance models, equipment designs, testing requirements, warranties, and performance guarantees.
  • Experience supporting BESS supplier or integrator selection, equipment procurement, EPC evaluations, contract negotiations, and multidisciplinary design reviews.
  • Working knowledge of BESS safety requirements and standards, including NFPA 855, UL 9540, UL 9540A, and applicable electrical and fire codes.
  • Strong technical and commercial judgment, with the ability to effectively manage consultants, suppliers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
