Job summary

Customer.io is seeking an experienced backend engineer to design and own large-scale, distributed infrastructure that powers a data-heavy marketing platform. You will tackle reliability, performance, and real-time processing across global customers, building foundational layers that teams rely on and evolving the architecture for high availability.

You’ll work with Go, cloud-native services, and cutting-edge data pipelines, shaping infrastructure that matters and mentoring others along the way.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience with distributed systems and large-scale backend architecture.
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, and fault tolerance.
• Ability to reason about performance, capacity, and trade-offs at scale.
• Experience with event-driven systems, queues, or data pipelines is a plus.
• Collaborative mindset and ability to lead initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve distributed systems to handle billions of daily events.
• Lead architectural decisions around performance and real-time processing.
• Improve service communication via APIs and messaging systems.
• Identify bottlenecks and drive reliability improvements across teams.
• Contribute to on-call rotations and system debugging at scale.
• Share knowledge through writing and mentorship.
