Job summary

GitLab is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer for the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. You will own backend features across flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-guided work items and evaluation systems.

You’ll lead major features from unclear problems through release, mentoring peers and shaping technical decisions in a highly visible product area. You’ll work with Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and AI gateway, in a fully remote, async-first team spanning Canada and Europe,

Qualifications

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase.
• Production experience with Python.
• Experience driving substantial projects with several engineers over multiple months.
• End-to-end ownership of features, scoping, trade-offs, and user engagement.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through design, implementation, rollout and post-launch learning.
• Build the flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items and durable specs.
• Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems for workflow quality and cost.
• Use Ruby on Rails and Python to build reliable production systems with PostgreSQL and APIs.
• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and users to shape scope and trade-offs.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction across Plan group and AI initiatives.
