Job summary

GitLab is hiring an Intermediate Backend Engineer to take backend features from clarifying the problem through shipping and production follow-up. You’ll collaborate with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security to deliver secure, scalable services in a remote, asynchronous setting.

You’ll join a high-performance culture where AI helps drive efficiency, learning, and impact, with ownership and accountability across the engineering lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Production backend experience with shipping features and services.
• Strong API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages.
• Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment.
• Good written communication and collaboration across teams.
• Practical experience with AI coding tools and reviewing generated code.

Responsibilities

• Own and ship backend features from design to production with minimal guidance.
• Build for production: secure, observable, and performant code and APIs.
• Improve test coverage: unit, integration, contract, and E2E where appropriate.
• Operate and troubleshoot deployments, identify tech debt, and participate in on-call as needed.
• Leverage AI productively while validating outputs and understanding limitations.
