Job summary

Ellipsis Health is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area or remote within the United States to design, build, and scale core systems powering our conversational AI platform. You will own backend APIs, orchestration layers, and data pipelines, collaborating with AI/ML teams to deliver secure, reliable healthcare solutions.

You will work across microservices, cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure), and CI/CD pipelines, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and FHIR while optimizing

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend development with secure, scalable systems.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js for API development.
• Expertise in RESTful API and GraphQL development.
• Experience building orchestration layers/workflow engines for distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) and Kubernetes.
• Strong database design and management experience (SQL and NoSQL).
• Security best practices including authentication, authorization, encryption, and secure data handling.
• Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines.
• Own services in production end-to-end including deployment and monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and maintain scalable APIs and microservices for conversational AI workflows.
• Design and manage orchestration services coordinating workflows across AI systems and external integrations.
• Optimize back-end systems for performance, reliability, and scale.
• Ensure secure HIPAA/FHIR compliant integration with healthcare systems.
• Collaborate with AI team to deploy NLP workflows in production.
• Design database schemas and data pipelines for structured and unstructured data.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for reliable deployments.
• Troubleshoot back-end issues focusing on uptime and reliability.
• Mentor junior developers and foster high-quality engineering culture.
• Stay ahead of industry trends and introduce performance-enhancing technologies.
