Job summary

Pleo is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Bank Infrastructure team. You will design, build and maintain integrations with banks and payment partners, ensuring reliable, scalable money movement.

You will improve fault tolerance, observability, and compliance readiness across payment rails. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor peers, while driving architecture decisions that support Pleo’s 10+-year mission to simplify spend for 40,000+ customers.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience building payment integrations and bank APIs (ISO 20022, SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments).
• Experience operating highly available, resilient distributed systems with robust error recovery.
• Proficiency in server-side development with Kotlin or Java and microservices.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tools (Grafana).

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain bank/payment integrations across schemes.
• Own reliability of inbound/outbound payment flows, including reconciliation.
• Architect resilient systems against outages and edge cases.
• Lead observability and operational excellence initiatives.
• Collaborate with compliance, finance, and product to evolve payments.
