Job summary

Uber is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for its Maps Experience team in the US. You will design, build, and scale backend services handling map, location, and geospatial data for Rider and Earner apps.

You’ll own end-to-end backend systems, collaborate across teams, and drive architectural improvements for low-latency, highly available services at global scale. Equity and benefits are available for full-time hires.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend software engineering or related field.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Go, C++, Python).
• Experience designing, building, and operating scalable backend services and distributed systems in production.
• Strong understanding of API design, SOA, data storage, and distributed systems fundamentals.
• Experience with performance optimization, troubleshooting, and building reliable, highly available services.
• Proven ability to drive complex engineering projects from design to production.
• Strong problem-solving skills and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs serving map, location, and geospatial data to millions of users.
• Build and optimize high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems for real-time map experiences.
• Own backend systems end-to-end from architecture to production operations.
• Drive evolution of backend architecture to improve scalability and developer productivity.
• Collaborate with mobile engineers, Maps platform teams, Product, and other engineering teams to deliver map-based experiences.
• Identify and resolve complex technical challenges, make pragmatic tradeoffs, and contribute to design and code reviews.
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices within the team.
