Job summary

Happen Bank in San Francisco is seeking a Sr Software Engineer (Backend) to own the authentication and user profile service end-to-end, designing, building and operating core systems used by millions of users across lending, banking and investment products with secure, scalable APIs.

You will collaborate with product, data, and security teams, drive architectural decisions, mentor juniors, and apply AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining reliability and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software engineering experience with backend focus.
• Deep understanding of RESTful API design for internal/external consumers.
• SME in Java and its ecosystem, including Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, JVM.
• Strong system design skills for distributed, scalable architectures on AWS.
• Hands-on debugging across services, infrastructure, and dependencies.
• Experience integrating with external vendors/partners and ensuring resilience.
• Experience using AI tools to accelerate engineering workflows responsibly.
• Emphasis on security, maintainability, and long-term cost considerations.
• Collaborates effectively with product and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives end-to-end across authentication and user profile domain.
• Own reliability of systems authenticating users and managing their data and sessions.
• Design and operate distributed systems on AWS, including Lambda-driven flows.
• Document technical decisions balancing scalability, cost, and maintainability.
• Lead design reviews with architects, PMs, and stakeholders.
• Harden authentication/profile APIs for data integrity across services.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across distributed systems.
• Integrate AI tools into engineering workflows and mentor peers.
• Improve engineering practices and coach engineers through code reviews.
