Scribd, Inc. is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Everand Core backend. You will shape backend architecture, own reliability, and partner across product, design, analytics, and ML teams to deliver scalable, observable services.

You will mentor engineers, drive design reviews, and help modernize legacy systems while championing a user‑first mindset for reading and listening experiences.

Qualifications

• Significant backend experience building and scaling distributed systems.
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language such as Ruby (preferred), Scala, Go, or Python.
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, and defining SLOs with metrics and alerts.
• Proven leadership: architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and large migrations.
• Ability to collaborate with product, design, analytics, and ML teams.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for the Everand backend and socialize design docs.
• Own backend reliability, CI/CD, databases, queues, costs, and observability.
• Mentor teammates and raise the team's capability through reviews and pairing.
• Be the Everand backend voice in cross-team planning and execution.
• Drive scalable, observable systems while simplifying complexity.
• Modernize legacy systems to improve velocity and scalability.
• Partner with product, design, analytics, web/mobile/ML engineers to support experimentation and a single source of truth.
