Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join as the first engineering hire on a new AI orchestration platform. You will shape the technical foundation, make architectural decisions, and own backend development end-to-end.

You’ll build an orchestration core over multiple AI providers, define API contracts for a Flutter client, and implement a media pipeline with cost controls. This is a remote-first startup with fast-paced growth.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of backend development experience in a commercial setting.
• Strong API design skills (REST, gRPC) and maintainable interfaces for mobile apps.
• Experience integrating third‑party APIs with retries, idempotency, rate limiting, and graceful failure recovery.
• Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL, transactions, indexing, and data consistency.
• Experience with asynchronous processing and messaging systems (SQS, Redis, Kafka, Temporal).
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), Docker, and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Observability practices: metrics, logging, tracing; familiarity with Grafana, Sentry is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Build the orchestration core — a unified layer on top of multiple AI providers with failover, retries, rate limiting, and onboarding new models quickly.
• Own the API contracts consumed by the Flutter client — stability, versioning, and clear error handling.
• Build the media pipeline for storing/delivering generated assets (S3/CDN) with cost control.
• Keep the system reliable under paid-traffic spikes: metrics, tracing, and per-provider alerting.
• Implement usage accounting: per-generation cost tracking, integration with billing, and idempotent charging.
• Design the async generation pipeline: long-running queues, provider webhooks, delivery guarantees, and recovery from failures.
