Job summary

Uber is seeking a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to set the technical direction for AV and Customer Obsession experiences. You will own architecture across AV, Fleet, Uber for Business, and Direct integrations to create a unified foundation as these businesses scale.

You’ll collaborate with product, operations, and platform teams to design scalable backend systems, build reliable testing and quality frameworks, and mentor engineers toward Staff-level impact across multiple teams.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong backend: Go, Java, or C++.
• Extensive backend engineering and distributed systems experience.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale, highly available systems.
• Proven technical leadership across multiple teams.
• Strong system design, architecture, and cross-functional communication.

Responsibilities

• Define the backend architecture and technical strategy for AV customer support systems.
• Establish scalable integration patterns across Fleet, U4B, Direct, and other businesses.
• Partner with the Customer Obsession Platform team to leverage shared platform and Agentic AI capabilities.
• Build proactive trip-lifecycle support, reliability, and end-to-end testing strategies.
• Drive alignment across Engineering, Product, Operations, and platform teams.
• Mentor Senior engineers toward Staff-level impact.
