Position Title: Senior AWS Cloud Engineer

Location: Washington, DC

Position Type: Full-Time

Client: NHTSA

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to design, implement, secure, and maintain our Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. This role will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in cloud engineering, automation, and best practices to ensure a secure, scalable, and high-performing cloud environment that supports our business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cloud Architecture & Management:
   • Design and implement secure, scalable, and highly available AWS architectures.
   • Manage day-to-day AWS infrastructure, including EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, IAM, Lambda, CloudFormation, and more.
   • Lead cloud resource provisioning, cost optimization, and performance monitoring.
2. Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
   • Develop and maintain automation scripts using tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform, and AWS CDK.
   • Automate deployment pipelines (CI/CD) using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline, etc.
3. Security & Compliance:
   • Implement and enforce cloud security best practices, including IAM policies, network segmentation, and encryption.
   • Collaborate with security and compliance teams to meet regulatory and audit requirements.
4. Monitoring & Incident Response:
   • Set up monitoring, logging, and alerting using AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, ELK Stack, etc.
   • Respond to incidents and troubleshoot performance or availability issues in the AWS environment.
5. Collaboration & Mentorship:
   • Collaborate with DevOps, software engineering, and IT teams to support application deployments and cloud integration.
   • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior cloud engineers and other IT staff.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with AWS cloud engineering and architecture.
• Strong experience with IaC tools such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
• Deep understanding of networking, security, and high availability in the cloud.
• Proficiency in scripting (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Experience with container technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like ECS or EKS.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or similar certification strongly preferred.

Additional Qualifications:

• Experience with hybrid cloud environments and cloud migration strategies.
• Familiarity with ITIL, DevSecOps practices, and compliance frameworks (e.g., FedRAMP, HIPAA, NIST).
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

Working Conditions:

• May be required to participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support.
• Remote work may be available depending on organizational policy.
