Job summary

Varda Space Industries in El Segundo, CA, seeks a Senior Space Systems Engineer, Avionics, to oversee design, integration, and testing of avionics for our Winnebago Spaceship. You’ll ensure readiness for launch and reentry, collaborating with multiple engineering teams to meet mission objectives.

You will lead development of electrical architecture, system diagrams, and verification plans, while mentoring engineers and driving test automation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience in system design, test planning, and validation.
• Proficiency in Python programming.
• Experience with power supplies, modular DAQ systems, RTD and 4-20mA devices, and general test equipment.
• Familiarity with Unix environments and command line utilities.

Responsibilities

• Define project scopes and requirements, guiding designs from concept to prototype and full-scale production.
• Develop electrical architecture, system diagrams, and budgets for power, telemetry, channel count, size, and mass predictions.
• Analyze architecture for faults and risks; develop mitigation plans and support FDIR when hardware solutions are unfeasible.
• Conduct verification plans for avionics systems on flight and HITL hardware for launch readiness.
• Participate in mission operations as an Avionics specialist or system operator; monitor system health and suggest corrective actions.
• Oversee integration of Winnebago avionics systems as primary contact for integrated systems investigations.
• Design, build, and operate HITL testbeds to simulate spacecraft on the ground.
• Develop avionics ground infrastructure and test racks; contribute to engineering best practices and test automation.
• Mentor and train new engineers to foster learning and continuous improvement.
