Job summary

Bernalillo County seeks a Senior Attorney to serve as legal counsel to the Board of County Commissioners and County management. Drafts ordinances, resolutions, contracts, administrative policies, and other legal documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Represents the County in judicial and administrative proceedings and provides legal advice on a variety of complex issues affecting County operations. The role requires a J.D.

Qualifications

• J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited institution with valid NM license.
• Good standing with the New Mexico State Supreme Court.
• Five years of legal practice including litigation, appellate work, and advising on compliance.
• Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Serve as legal counsel to elected officials and County management on legal matters.
• Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and policies to ensure compliance.
• Prepare legal documents related to County operations and court matters.
• Conduct legal research and analysis to support policy decisions.
• Provide legal opinions to the County Attorney on statutory and regulatory issues.
• Represent the Board and County in state and federal courts and before administrative bodies.
• Advise County departments on employment, labor, land use, and related matters.
• Collaborate with Legal Department staff and external counsel.
• Supervise or coordinate work of outside counsel as assigned.
