Job summary

Engtal is seeking an experienced Area Operations Manager to lead multiple heavy civil construction projects across Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. This senior role oversees project execution, profitability, staffing, scheduling, and client relationships, driving safety and quality across complex infrastructure initiatives.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of experience in heavy civil construction.
• 10+ years of experience managing construction teams.
• Strong background delivering heavy civil, highway, transportation, or related infrastructure projects.
• Proven experience overseeing multiple projects and construction teams simultaneously.
• Strong understanding of construction means and methods, project scheduling, budgeting, and cost controls.
• Demonstrated experience managing contractual risk, change orders, claims, and owner negotiations.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Experience with self-performed heavy civil construction operations is highly desirable.
• Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the planning, execution, and overall performance of multiple heavy civil construction projects simultaneously.
• Lead and support Project Managers, Superintendents, and construction teams to ensure successful project delivery.
• Maintain accountability for project budgets, profitability, cost controls, financial reporting, and overall operational performance.
• Review construction schedules, identify potential delays, and develop strategies to keep projects on track.
• Manage contractual obligations, change orders, claims, disputes, and negotiations with project owners.
• Coordinate project staffing, resource allocation, equipment needs, and subcontractor procurement.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with project owners, public agencies, subcontractors, and internal leadership.
• Ensure compliance with company safety standards, quality requirements, and applicable regulations.
• Conduct regular project financial and operational reviews to identify risks and improve performance.
• Mentor and develop construction personnel while supporting the continued growth of regional operations.
