Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an engineer to turn ambiguous business problems into working AI solutions, including client-facing delivery and production ownership. You will work across discovery, build, and operations, ensuring measurable success and responsible deployment.

You will lead architecture decisions, develop end‑to‑end capabilities, and mentor engineers while collaborating with stakeholders and executives to deliver practical AI outcomes.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software.
• 2+ years building apps that integrate large language models including prompt engineering and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and test sets.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL with API integrations.
• Ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Judgment on tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity and explain to engineers and execs.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs and design rationales.
• Ability to work with minimal direction in ambiguous situations and drive decisions.
• U.S. Citizenship required and ability to obtain federal security clearances.

Responsibilities

• Lead discovery with stakeholders to understand workflow and success criteria.
• Define measurable success criteria before building.
• Recommend non-AI solutions when appropriate; identify better interfaces or process changes.
• Choose AI patterns (extraction, classification, summarization, retrieval, or agentic workflows).
• Decide where workloads run, balancing quality, cost, latency, and security.
• Build end-to-end capability including prompts, retrieval, APIs, data handling, errors, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets and iterate based on results.
• Determine readiness for deployment and monitor post-launch metrics.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and traceability.
• Produce documentation on solution scope, validation, and failure modes.
• Set direction with proof-driven roadmaps and mentor engineers.
