Overview

The Senior Animal Technician is responsible for performing various animal husbandry duties in conventional, immunodeficient, and transgenic/knockout rodent colonies. This role includes maintaining animal rooms, monitoring rodent colonies, and performing technical duties such as medical treatments for minor injuries, emergency separations, and euthanasia.

Responsibilities

  1. Changing rodent cages following established SOPs. Administering special dietary formulations and medicated water to rodents as per research protocols.
  2. Maintaining cleanliness of animal rooms and facility areas in accordance with sanitation standards, including sweeping, vacuuming, washing walls, floors, equipment, and shelving as scheduled.
  3. Monitoring rodent colonies for signs of illness or injury up to twice daily. Recording and reporting findings via SOP using Manage Tasks and HMR system apps.
  4. Operating and maintaining laboratory animal husbandry equipment such as laminar flow benches, biosafety cabinets, ventilated racks, autoclaves, sterilizers, and cage wash equipment. Reporting malfunctions immediately.
  5. Performing technical duties including medical treatments for minor injuries, emergency separations, and euthanasia.
  6. Keeping accurate records of room logs and health monitoring reports (HMR), utilizing computerized data collection systems and apps for cage census and health monitoring.
  7. Documenting all tasks completed using ManageTasks, HMRs, Alerts, and Compliance reports as required.
  8. Properly preparing hazardous or chemically treated cages, waste, and carcasses for disposal at ABSL 1, 2 levels, and Chemical 1, 2 levels.
