Job summary

American Express seeks a driven risk professional to identify and assess operational risks across business processes and systems, partnering with process owners to evaluate risk scenarios and support risk assessments, testing, and quality assurance programs.

You will maintain risk dashboards and KRIs, support monitoring and thematic reporting, map controls to risks, and help business units strengthen controls and governance in line with regulatory and internal standards.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of experience in operational risk management.
• Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities.
• Project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards.
• Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.

Responsibilities

• Identify risks throughout business processes and systems with business process owners
• Assess operational risk implications for new and existing products, features, and services within new product approval and change management governance frameworks
• Facilitate US Consumer/Global Dining risk assessments, including Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), periodic reviews, and assessment criteria updates
• Support further assessments and testing/quality assurance programs to ensure regulatory and internal standards are met
• Support control monitoring and compile key operational risk trends, activities, and events
• Identify high-risk areas for intervention, including independent quality assurance and vertical process testing
• Support thematic risk reporting on risk levels, trends, and causes
• Categorize controls and map them against risks and processes
• Support business units in identifying risks and areas where product changes or improved controls may be required
• Support risk management practices within the business
• Maintain risk dashboards and key risk indicators (KRIs) for ongoing monitoring
• Maintain risk profiles and updated risk registers
• Share insights, best practices, and themes across the enterprise

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function)
• Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities
• Project management, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
• Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively
• Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Mgmt., or related field (preferred)
• Experience supporting identification of operational risks throughout business processes and systems (preferred)
• Experience facilitating risk assessments, further assessments, and testing programs to ensure regulatory and internal standards are met (preferred)
• Experience supporting independent control monitoring and identifying control improvements (preferred)
• Experience identifying areas of risk for intervention, including independent quality assurance and process testing (preferred)
• Experience compiling thematic risk reporting on risk levels, emerging trends, and root causes (preferred)
