Job summary

Robots & Pencils is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to lead the design and delivery of AI/ML systems. You will own end-to-end architecture, steer model development, and drive scalable AI infrastructure across teams.

You will join a cross-functional, high-velocity environment where reliability, security, and scalability are paramount. You’ll set standards, mentor engineers, and shape AI strategy to align with business goals.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering, with 4+ years in AI/ML systems in production.
• Deep expertise in scalable, maintainable software design for AI systems.
• Cloud experience, especially AWS GenAI offerings.
• Proven track record shipping complex AI systems in production environments.
• Experience with AI frameworks and orchestration tools.
• Observability tooling for LLM apps and building capabilities where missing.
• Understanding of AI safety, responsible AI, and prompt defenses.
• Hands-on Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of end-to-end AI/ML systems and architecture decisions.
• Build and evolve scalable ML platforms and pipelines for cross-team use.
• Set AI-forward engineering standards and drive adoption of tools like Claude Code and Cursor.
• Shape AI strategy with product and leadership, aligning tech with business outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and lead design reviews to raise engineering rigor and collaboration.
• Own high-stakes pieces of work from research to production with emphasis on reliability and cost.
