Job summary

Capital One seeks a Sr. Staff AI Engineer to lead development of responsible, scalable AI systems in a remote-eligible capacity. You will collaborate with engineers, researchers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered banking solutions, build production-grade AI infrastructure, and mentor leaders across teams.

The role emphasizes collaboration, architecture vision, and advancing responsible AI throughout Capital One’s tech stack, with strong focus on safety, governance, and cost-aware design.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
• At least 10 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
• Experience architecting AI platforms with tradeoffs around cost, latency, throughput and accuracy
• Experience deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional team of engineers, researchers, PMs to deliver AI-powered products.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation model training, LLM inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• Leverage a broad stack of Open Source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch, and more.
• Invent and introduce state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve performance, scalability, cost, latency, throughput.
• Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems at Capital One.
• Define and steer the technical AI architecture vision, integrating research breakthroughs into production with reliability and scale.
• Lead the establishment of AI safety, transparency standards that guide model development and deployment.
• Drive multi-year platform initiatives that unify data, compute, and model lifecycle management under an enterprise AI architecture.
• Mentor senior technical leaders across research, data and engineering disciplines, developing the next generation of AI leadership at Capital One
