Job summary

American Psychological Association in Washington, DC is seeking an AI Engineer to design, build, and operate agentic AI and retrieval-augmented generation services that automate multi-step business workflows with strong guardrails and observable quality.

You will partner with engineering and business stakeholders to deliver deployable AI systems, focusing on reliability, latency, and secure tool-calling patterns across AWS deployments and enterprise platforms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 5–10 years of software engineering with 1–2 years in production Generative AI.
• Hands-on with agentic apps and RAG in production.
• Built services and APIs on AWS with focus on reliability and cost.
• Full-stack delivery using Angular and Node/TypeScript.
• Familiar with CI/CD and operational practices.

Responsibilities

• Design and build agentic AI applications with explicit tool boundaries and safety controls.
• Develop end-to-end RAG solutions emphasizing relevance, latency, and reliability.
• Define quality metrics for agents and retrieval; iterate on results.
• Integrate tools and data via standard interfaces for secure access.
• Deliver Angular/Node interfaces and APIs for business use.
• Deploy and operate AI services on AWS with logging and error handling.
• Enable workflow automation by delivering AI-driven automation layers.
• Create technical documentation for architectures and runbooks.
• Collaborate with product and stakeholders to validate outcomes.
