Capital One is seeking an AI Engineer 4 to help build and deploy responsible AI systems at scale in San Francisco. You will partner with engineers, researchers, PMs, and data teams to deliver AI-powered products that transform how capital is moved and how customers interact with banking services.

The role emphasizes foundation model training, LLM inference, and production‑grade AI pipelines, with exposure to open‑source and SaaS AI tools. Strong cloud and hardware optimization skills are valued.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field plus at least 4 years of experience developing AI/ML algorithms or Technologies.
• Master’s degree plus at least 2 years of experience developing AI/ML algorithms or technologies.
• At least 4 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross‑functional teams to deliver AI‑powered products that change how associates work and how customers interact with Capital One.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation model training, LLM inference, agents and multi‑agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, and governance.
• Leverage Open Source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch, and more.
• Invent and introduce foundation model optimization techniques to improve performance, scalability, cost, latency, throughput.
• Own end‑to‑end architecture for complex AI systems with maintainability and ethical alignment.
• Define and maintain SLOs for AI reliability (latency, uptime, drift).
• Collaborate with infrastructure to optimize GPU/TPU utilisation and accelerate model inference pipelines.
• Lead cross‑functional technical reviews for new AI deployments ensuring security and data governance.
