American Express is seeking a Senior AI Engineer II – Agentic AI to build production‑grade agentic AI systems powering real‑time customer and enterprise experiences. You will own end‑to‑end AI solutions, from agent framework to evals and production services, collaborating with architects, product, UX, data science, and engineering.

Qualifications

• 6+ years building large‑scale backend or distributed systems in production.
• Shipped LLM‑powered features to real users and can discuss failures and learnings.
• Strong TypeScript or Go, with comfort across both languages.
• Strong distributed‑systems instincts: queues, event‑driven design, failure modes, idempotency.
• Judgment about what an LLM should decide versus code decisions.
• Proven ability to drive designs across a team.
• Clear communication across engineering, product, and design.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design of new agent capabilities from concept to shipped system.
• Build and operate services end to end, from trigger events through LLM reasoning to results.
• Extend and shape the shared agent framework including orchestration, tools, and observability.
• Design and tune RAG and embedding pipelines in the vector search stack.
• Create evals for new agent behaviors and gate prompt changes.
• Own reliability: failure classification, idempotency, DLQ handling, and rollout safety.
• Set design and code review standards; mentor engineers ramping onto the AI stack.
• Evaluate emerging models and fold useful ones into the platform.
