Job summary

American Express Technology is seeking a Staff AI Engineer – Agentic AI in New York. You will shape how agentic AI systems are designed, built, and operated across the enterprise, balancing autonomy, safety, and scalability.

You will work with product and UX partners to influence what gets built, guide architecture decisions, and contribute hands‑on implementation across Python, Go, and TypeScript, in a cloud‑first environment. This is a senior IC role with broad impact.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of experience building large‑scale distributed systems and strong experience with LLMs, agentic workflows or ML infrastructure.
• Proven ownership of complex, cross‑cutting agentic systems across multiple teams or products.
• Strong fundamentals in backend systems, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical direction for agentic AI initiatives, shaping architecture, autonomy boundaries, and system design.
• Design, build, and operate production‑grade agentic AI systems used across multiple products.
• Own and evolve shared agentic AI capabilities: frameworks, planning, memory, RAG pipelines, and ML infrastructure.
• Lead technical design reviews and help teams navigate tradeoffs involving autonomy, safety, reliability, and cost.
• Partner across teams to deliver complex agentic AI initiatives from concept to production.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical bar for agentic AI development.
