Job summary

Avalara is seeking an experienced AI Automation Engineer to shape how work is automated across our cloud-based tax technology platform. You will lead the design of scalable AI-powered automation solutions using n8n, partner across teams to embed intelligent workflows, and drive secure, measurable automation at scale.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field with 10+ years in automation/workflow engineering/architecture.
• Hands-on experience with n8n or Boomi for enterprise automation and AI-enabled workflows.
• Strong API-first and event-driven design expertise, REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, JWT, and secure integration practices.
• Experience implementing CI/CD, governance, observability, and reliability across enterprise-scale platforms.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including AI services and large language model integrations.
• Proven ability to identify AI automation opportunities, mentor teams, and elevate engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Own and drive Avalara's enterprise AI automation and transformation strategy with n8n as the core workflow platform.
• Design scalable, secure automation solutions to reduce manual work and improve efficiency.
• Develop AI-enabled workflows, agents, and decisioning frameworks across functions.
• Architect API-first and event-driven integrations connecting enterprise systems and AI services.
• Establish platform standards for development, deployment, monitoring, and governance.
• Define CI/CD processes, environment strategies, and release practices for automation quality.
• Create reusable automation frameworks, templates, and AI accelerators for consistency.
• Implement observability and performance measurements for traditional and AI workflows.
• Lead design reviews, workflow assessments, and post-incident reviews; mentor engineers.
