Job summary

Nordstrom, Inc. is expanding its AI Agentic Solutions team in Seattle. Senior Engineer leads design and delivery of agentic systems across orchestration, tool-use, and enterprise integration, balancing performance, cost, and user impact.

You will mentor engineers, shape product-oriented engineering decisions, and collaborate with security, infra, and business teams to scale AI capabilities across commerce and customer service.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering complex distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs, foundation models, prompt engineering, RAG, and embedding-based search in production.
• Experience designing, building, and operating AI agents or agentic workflows in production.
• Ability to optimize context for agents considering token, latency, and cost constraints.
• Experience designing evaluation frameworks and safety guardrails for LLM-based systems.
• Familiarity with memory patterns for agents and durable workflow state.
• Hands-on experience with agentic frameworks such as Claude Agent SDK, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel, or OpenAI Assistants API.
• Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration: task decomposition, tool-use pipelines, human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Product-minded engineering approach with strong user impact instincts.
• Proficiency in Python; cloud-native development on AWS and/or GCP.
• Experience collaborating with product, business, infrastructure, and security teams.
• Strong communication skills; able to explain complex tech to diverse audiences.
• Agile development experience (Scrum/Kanban/Lean).
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS, Engineering, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Define the 'art of the possible' with agents and translate problems into agentic solutions with clear success criteria.
• Design and build core agentic solutions end-to-end across orchestration, tool-use, and enterprise integrations.
• Own end-to-end solution design spanning multiple engineers with full integration.
• Apply context engineering to balance token, latency, and decision quality across patterns.
• Develop evaluations and guardrails to ensure safety, reliability, and accuracy.
• Architect memory and state management for cross-session agent reasoning.
• Integrate LLM APIs, embeddings, vector stores into production services.
• Articulate trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term scalability.
• Lead design/code reviews and maintain high quality standards.
• Define metrics, observability, and performance/cost/safety criteria for agentics.
• Collaborate with business, infrastructure, and security for improvements and bug fixes.
• Mentor junior engineers and participate in hiring processes.
