Job summary

Karman Space & Defense is seeking a senior mechanical design engineer in Mukilteo, WA to lead the development of aerospace structures and systems from concept through validation and qualification.

You will mentor junior engineers, support proposals, and manage multiple design efforts with a high degree of autonomy. A strong background in aerospace/defense hardware and GD&T is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent.
• Typically 6+ years designing aerospace/defense systems.
• Proven experience designing hardware that passed qualification testing.
• Proficiency in mechanical design, engineering principles, and drawing conventions.
• Proficient in SolidWorks and GD&T.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAE tools relevant to mechanical systems.
• Strong math skills and understanding of material properties, strength, and stress.
• Ability to read drawings and technical diagrams from verbal/written instructions.
• Strong computer skills and familiarity with common engineering tools.
• Experience with design-based military and commercial specifications.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks with safety focus.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving creativity.

Responsibilities

• Leads mechanical design across concept development, detailed design, validation, and delivery.
• Conceptualizes structures, mechanisms, and systems to meet requirements and standards.
• Performs analyses and tolerance stack‑ups to validate design intent.
• Verifies calculations and analyses done by team members.
• Leads design efforts for systems across multiple programs.
• Supports proposal development and rapid concept design with CAD visuals.
• Produces bills of materials and drafting packages for designs.
• Supports prototyping, assembly, testing, and qualification.
• Mentors junior engineers and provides technical guidance.
