POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Accountant, SEC Reporting is a key member of JBG SMITH’s Accounting Department, supporting all elements of the Company’s internal and external reporting, including the preparation of consolidated financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and filed with the SEC. The role combines hands-on preparation of the quarterly and annual financial statements with technical accounting research and documentation on both recurring and non-routine transactions.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, SEC Reporting, the Senior Accountant will work directly with the SEC Reporting leadership team and gain exposure to the full public company reporting cycle, from quarter-end close through filing, and a company-wide view of JBG SMITH that few Senior Accountant roles offer. The position is an ideal next step for an accountant from public accounting or industry who wants to build deep expertise in SEC reporting and technical accounting, while collaborating with teams across the Company in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Assist with the preparation of the Company’s SEC filings on Forms 10-Q, 10-K, and 8-K, including the quarterly supplemental information package and the workpapers and analysis that support the financial statements, footnote disclosures, and MD&A;
  • Prepare quarterly and annual analyses over complex areas of accounting, including the statement of cash flows, leases, held-for-sale designations, consolidations, stock-based compensation, and earnings per share;
  • Lead technical accounting research and draft memoranda applying authoritative literature and interpretive guidance to matters ranging from individual asset-level transactions to broader corporate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, debt modifications, and consolidations;
  • Identify opportunities to enhance reporting processes and controls, including leveraging AI tools to automate recurring tasks, accelerate technical accounting research, and support contract reviews;
  • Prepare executive reporting materials and lead quarterly meetings with accounting leadership on reporting timelines and significant transactions;
  • Support the calculation of the Company’s key financial and non-GAAP metrics (e.g., Core FFO, FAD, NOI, and Adjusted EBITDA) and help identify the drivers of quarterly results;
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors, preparing requested support on a timely basis and liaising with other teams across the Company;
  • Support the annual review and ongoing maintenance of the Company’s SOX control documentation, collaborating with control owners to keep narratives over the financial statement close and financial reporting processes accurate and current;
  • Assist in evaluating and documenting the impact of new accounting and SEC pronouncements, and in updating the Company’s accounting policies accordingly;
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments including property, corporate, and capital projects accounting, portfolio management, asset management, legal, capital markets, tax, and leasing; and
  • Support ad hoc projects as requested.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED (REQUIREMENTS)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting;
  • Two to four years of experience in a Big 4 or national public accounting firm and/or with a publicly traded company;
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and internal controls over financial reporting;
  • Advanced Excel skills;
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a track record of managing multiple deliverables against SEC filing deadlines and a high standard for accuracy in tie-outs and disclosures; and
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to document and explain accounting conclusions to auditors and non-accounting colleagues.
WHAT WILL SET YOU APART (PREFERRED)
  • Active CPA license;
  • Experience with SEC reporting, technical accounting research, or drafting accounting memoranda;
  • Commercial, multifamily, or other real estate experience; and
  • Experience with Yardi, Workiva, and comfort using data and AI tools to automate recurring processes.
